Dangar Island, NSW

Updated: Jan 2, 2022

Visit this island for a little getaway, some peace & tranquility only 1 hour north of Sydney's CBD. The only suburb in Sydney with no cars, so there is no traffic or noise just the sound of nature & wildlife. Whether you are staying overnight or visting for a day-trip from Sydney you're guaranteed to recharge those batteries!

How to get there:

Jump in the car for a road trip, and drive to Brooklyn Wharf / Hawkesbury River Marina. Park in car park at your own risk - it is restricted parking there however we were fine all weekend to leave the car here and catch the Ferry over to Dangar Island. (Please just be mindful of this).

Another option is to catch the train from Sydney via Hornsby to the Hawkesbury River Train Station. From the marina it is a very short boat trip across. You can either pre-book a Ferry (cost was $60 return ~ quite pricey in my opinion) which brings you directly to the jetty of the Air BnB. Otherise a much cheaper, public water taxi will bring you to the public wharf and you'll need to carry everything with you to your accomodation which is quite a walk away.

I recommend the latter option if you are only visiting for a day - very expensive otherwise!

Things to do:

  • Enjoy a stroll around the idyllic island. Grab a map and find your way. Relax to the ultimate traquility and listen to the waves.

  • Visit The Depot Cafe for some coffee, breakfast or lunch on the waterfront - this is also a mini grocery store so if you forgot to pack suncream, bandaids, teabags etc you can do a little mini shop here.

  • There is a playground on the island also to keep the kids entertained.

  • Read about the history of the suburb - which is part of the Hornsby Shire Council.

  • Sunbathe and swim on Bradley's Beach.

  • Pop to the Bowling Club for some sunset drinks and dinner. Please note there is limited opening hours here so be sure to check these out also if you're going on a return ferry from Sydney.

Air B&B - The Boatshed Bliss (Click link HERE to visit listing)

The best Air BnB I'v stayed in without a doubt. This perfect little cottage was exactly what it promised - bliss! We caught the sunrise & the sunset from our balcony. Fell asleep listening to the sound of the waves below us, and adventured in Kayaks that are offered to you during your stay - all included in the price. Relax on the decking reading a book, unwind on the jetty and just watch the boats go by. Birds will pop by for a visit also and you can star gaze from the comfort of this dreamy boatshed cabin.

Things to note:

  • There is no TV (time to switch off) - however some WiFi connection.

  • Bring insect repellent - you will be staying near bushland.

  • Most of the island is quite steep walking and getting around on a hot day so pack water, comfy shoes, hats etc.

  • The access below at the wharf to walk around the island all depends on the mother nature & the tide of the waves. Coming back at night time when the sun has set in the darkness, may prove a bit tricky - so please be careful.

This won't disappoint and would be ideal for a romantic getaway, birthday, anniversary to escape the hustle & bustle of city-life.

As you can imagine, the reviews are excellent it is an extremely popular listing on Air BnB so if you are planning on making a booking - be sure to plan & book it in advance - at least a couple of months ahead. I shared this trip on my Instagram page and the demand was so high all weekend for me to share where we were staying - I linked it in my BIO and still receive some DM's about the name of the location now!

Enjoy your trip to this hidden Sydney treasure!
